At the LOVEtheatre head office, we are all huge theatre fans – as you would expect. Between us we have seen hundreds of shows and we always have the discussion of what is the best show we have ever seen. We asked the team to narrow it down to their absolute favourite so we could share it with you and see if you agree. After much deliberation (and office chairs being thrown around), here are the LOVEtheatre staff picks…
Mary Poppins - Spencer, E-Commerce Executive
I remember coming down to London to see Mary Poppins, a present for one of my early Birthdays, my family and I travelled to London together and had the best evening together. As the first London musical I ever saw, it inspired me to take my first steps in the industry and I CAN’T WAIT to see it in its return to the West End. I know almost every word to A Spoonful of Sugar and am a massive Zizi Strallen fan and without spoilers am super excited to see Mary Poppins fly into the Prince Edward Theatre again!
Sunday in the Park with George - Jack, E-Commerce Assistant
I can't help but choose Sunday in the Park with George. James Lapine's poignant and oftentimes deeply funny book is the perfect complement to Stephen Sondheim's gorgeously rich score. It also contains some of his most cleverly written and touching lyrics. The ensemble numbers have harmonies to die for, and as the new Broadway cast recording and live footage prove, Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford are an idyllic pairing. This production has the makings of what I believe to be the ultimate and most complete expression of the creative experience that you can see on stage.
Les Misérables, Charlotte, Performance Marketing Executive
If I had to choose one musical to see for the rest of my life it would be Les Misérables. This musical was one of my earliest memories of going to the theatre and even as a very young child I remember being captivated by its touching story and its incredible score. I have seen it at least 6 times in various locations across the UK including the recent concert version at the Gielgud Theatre and every time I still cry. I can’t wait to see it again when it returns to the Sondheim Theatre (formerly Queen's Theatre) with its new staging.
Come From Away, Ben, Sales Campaign Manager
Come From Away is a ‘must-see’ show. It’s the story of when the planes were diverted during 9/11 and even though the subject matter is very tragic the play is very uplifting. I have never been so moved by a show before. The 100 mins flew by. The whole cast are amazing. Never have I experienced the audience jump to their feet as soon as the cast came on to take their bows. This is my new favourite show and I look forward to seeing it again and again.
9 to 5 the Musical, Stephen, Sales and Marketing Executive
I went to see 9 to 5 the Musical on a girls night out, and it was so much fun! It’s got everything you need in a West End show: slick choreography, banging tunes, three sassy leads, and even a special intro from Dolly herself. I’ve had the song stuck in my head for weeks, and can’t wait to see it again!
